Sounds like a fun day, but it also sounds like your clutch might be on it's last legs. Mine started doing the same thing not too long ago, got on it too hard and it'd let go. Backed off a bit and it re-engaged and ran good. I'm assuming that your clutch wasn't just replaced or fiddled with in anyway recently.
