Any 85-94 carb or fuel injected head is interchangeable. The earlier 81-84 22r heads had a larger chamber which would lower compression if used on a later block. Also I'm not sure they have all the threaded bosses for hooking up the fuel injected intake system. The 20R heads were similar to the 81-84 heads. I'm sure someone else will chime in that knows for sure.

>>>*The 20R head can be installed on the late low deck engine, it requires milling the head drastically to the same thickness as the later 1985 to 1995 design. This is to increase the compression ratio back to normal and so the later timing chain will fit.

Without milling, the 96 link chain is too short and the 98 link chain is too long.

Serious milling of course does also weaken the casting, although some do this with success I personally won't since I don't like crabby phone calls.

Also if you do try this, note of course the manifolds from the early engine also need to be used.

The combination is interesting in that the tiny round ports and small valves on the 20R react as high velocity ports, thus giving a nice snappy low end response.

If using the 1981 to 1984 22R head, note the much larger combustion chamber. That head will bolt on but note this would only work with a specialty type piston designed to increase the compression ratio, otherwise it will actually run but has very little power.......*EB

the reason im asking is i have a 89 toyota pickup and i have eather a blown head gasket or a cracked head, im buying an toyota motorhome for parts for $50 runs and drives but all the wood is rotted out. the guy says he does not remember what motor is has but its carbed, i need a ratator and some other parts that are worth $50 but if it turns out that my head is cracked then it would be nice to be able to use the head from the motorhome as well, im probably just going to use a torch and cut the cross members out drop the motor/trans out the bottom and then scrap the rest of the motorhome so ill have all the parts handy and easly accessable

Body Damage is Cool
Sounds like a good plan. Do you know if the head has been surfaced before? You'll need to find out how much material they remove to machine it flat. If over .020", you'll need a thicker head gasket, or shim.

the shop that is doing my head work is the same shop that built an high performance big block a friend of mine had built for his gto. as far as i know the head has never been resurfaced. im sure that they will advise me if its under the min thickness but i will be sure to ask when i pick it up. there waiting on some parts right now it should be ready the first part of next week. in the mean time im cleaning up parts and getting old gaskets removed and stuff like that.

what size tap and die are required for chasing the head bolts and holes?
