In pursuit of higher gas mileage I installed a set of locking hubs on the T100 about 6 weeks ago. I didn't know what to expect, but I'd anticipated maybe a 1-2 mpg increase.
Surprise, the data shows slightly *worse* mileage with the hubs unlocked!
19.03 mpg unlocked 19.23 mpg locked, and that includes a 100 mile tow of a small trailer.
The unlocked data is a 2400 mile range. The locked is an 854 mile range.
Not at all what I'd expected to see. Apparently there's a lot more friction in those hub rings that I'd anticipated.

IMHO a 0.2 mpg difference is NOT statistically meaningful at all. Brake Specific Fuel Consumption is measured on a dyno and takes into account all factors that impact mpg - measuring it yourself via pumped gallons is virtually impossible. Air temp, humidity, tire pressure, actual speed, passenger weight[s], cargo, headwind/tailwind, headlight on/off, etc etc etc all have more than enough influence to make up a 0.2 mpg difference. Remember that the seasons have changed since you installed the hubs - this kind of test is almost meaningless unless run side by side in controlled conditions. I don't think the hubs should make that much of an mpg difference, biggest plus is that they save some wear on your CV joints.

I didn't notice any appreciable difference in overall milage when i went to locking hubs either. At least the front end components should last longer and boots are a pain to deal with.

Unpossible. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> There's no way simply unlocking your hubs could make mileage *worse*. The most "friction" they could have would be if they were locked, like the drive flanges.
I do agree that mileage savings are generally pretty insignificant though, and the real benefit is reduced wear and tear on the CV boots.

Mind you it's just a scosh, but it's a pretty durn consistent scosh. Ah well, in any case, I didn't get a boost from the locking hubs.

That water / gas system bs has been around as long as I have. Even went to a seminar, paid for by a customer, back in the 60's.IT IS 100% BS. Water does not compress. A very minor mistake in quantity will wreck a motor. Fugeddaboudit!
