The other ground cable you'd have would be from the pax lower front corner of the block to ground, usually the motor mount. There's also a pigtail ground on the firewall to the rear of the block on the exhaust side.

Give that starter cable a GOOD VISUAL inspection before you trust it again. Last, I'd unbolt the fuse block and turn it over to inspect for wire chaffing; it happens.
