Ok Have a 91 Montero 4x4 3.0 auto... that I just bought a few weeks ago..And am now a deff Montero Fan. love the truck .. But anyway it Ran fine.. idles fine.. but last night . it just shut off.. no strange noises nothing ... Now there is No Spark.. I'm not that familiar with Montero Ignition system.. Is there a link for a wiring diagram online? Or can someone step out where to start and work back from to the ECU in testing.. ? Is this a common problem? Kinda in a bind here.. this is my daily driver..

you come to right place here

there is an '89 manual link and it should be the same as 91 (or close) look for the name "MontyMcV" and in his signature is the link

the computer will show some codes..if it is working or not

but what other information can you give? (did you just wash the engine at the car wash, ect?)

Actually yes washed it about an hour before.. But its been since about 8 last night and still won't start.. thought about it being wet but figured it should of dried up by now.. But as far as other info.. It was running Great.. Then just turned off.. pulled a few plugs .. and no spark. (now this truck did sit for about 7 months before I bought it and started driving it). By the way.. Thanks for the Quick response.. This site is great.. I'm gonna go check out that link for the diagram.. Do you think it could be something that got wet.. and possibly shorted..? It was running for awhile after washed before it shut down.

The wiring diagram won't tell you much. The spark is controlled by the ecu, and these ecu's have a tendency to have failed capacitors, which leak and eat up the board traces. One of the first signs is a loss of spark (and without spark, the injectors dont fire either). Remove the ecu and smell for a fishy smell.

Test for 12v+ at the coil plus terminal (wiring diagram with connector diagrams is necessary here). Test for same at coil - terminal. Test for spark at the coil wire while cranking. Test for varying 12v+ at coil - while cranking, should flicker as the ecu breaks the coil ground to produce spark. Using jumper wires, connect coil + to batt +, and connect coil - to ground. Holding coil spark wire 1/4" from a good ground, make/break the coil - to ground path and see if you get spark.

That stupid little box next to the coil will make it not spark if it goes out. Also had something in the distributor go out and it would not spark. Aslo had several ECUs in different trucks go out and it would not run.

Have you taken off the dist. cap to take a look?

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

I have had 2 different no spark problems over the years, on was the power transister on the coil bracket and it was replaced then a few months later the ECM was bad, I just got around to installing the ECM today and all is working wonderfully. I also found that the ECM is actually what killed the old power transister because it was fluctuating too much for it. Oh but they did act differently when they went out though, when the power transister went out it would intermittantly have issues then never started, when the ECM went out it was just went somewhere, stopped the truck then went to restart and it was dead with no spark...

I hope this helps...
