Getting the Wheeling Fever
This is what I use, every two years:

Unfortunately, it isn't available where I live (southern NH) so I get it done in Canada while up visiting family. Lately, I've been thinking about buying in bulk and applying myself.

The stuff works. Places where rust would normally form on a 1989 Toyota truck are rust-free on mine - rockers, doors, back corners of cab, tailgate, bed. In 02 I cut away part of the bed with a sawzall near where the exhaust exits because a rotted exhaust blew on the sheet metal for too long and rotted a small section out. I did not paint or otherwise treat the cut metal. Just this year a bit of rust is forming around the cut where the rustcheck oozed out because I went 3 winters instead of two without getting the body treated. I wish there was somewhere around here I could get this done.

Some people recommend a product called Fluid Film for rust prevention. I haven't tried that myself. I think I read about it on plowsite.com.

If the end of your tailpipe ever rots off leaving the exhaust wearing against the rear quarter panel of the bed, replace the exhaust immediately! This will lead to a rotted quarter panel soon!

I live in upstate NY where salt is king. My answer, and it works, is WD-40. Spray the heck out of everything. Let it drip dry on a gravel or dirt area. Will take a few days to stop dripping. Puts one heck of a film of rust preventer in all the tight places. Cheap too. Pop the plugs on the doors and the screws on the step plates on the door sill. Squirt it in real good. Another favorite place is under the rear wheel wells. The sections on the bed that are on the corners of the wheel well section of the bed are great dirt catchers. Make sure you wash these spots regularly as well as the lip of the rear wells. That's where the bed will start to rot. Same deal with the tailgate. get the bottom seam wet with WD. Do this before winter and after things dry out in the spring.
