Getting the Wheeling Fever
I got the bolt, and removed the engine this morning. I also picked up that 83' 22r engine today. Everything looks like its there, should be able to bolt in and hook everything right up, I hope. Has anyone had any experience installing a older engine, in a 87 or newer truck? I am jus curious if the plugs are the same? Anything I need to know?

Double check the oil pans; from 2wd and 4wd they're not the same. You'd swap the dipstick tube, pan, and likely the pickup tube if that's the case.

This is a good time to take care of the clutch and flywheel while it's open if needed.

Oh yeah, make sure that pilot bearing doesn't have any rough spots.

Someone local I talked to recomended that I go purchase a clutch kit, and make sure it has a pilot shaft or something. I am guessing that is to help guide the clutch back up with the tranny.

I am going to get that clutch kit, and I would like to go ahead and change the head gasket and possibly the oil pan gasket while I have it out. What about the timing chain, should I go ahead and pull all that stuff apart and replace it as well? I just plan on using this motor long enough for me to rebuild my 87 22r. Anything else that isnt to expensive or hard to replace that I should before I install this older engine? I hate to put too much money in it, since it is just a temp.

Well I said, I am going to get the clutch kit, auto zone wants $189 for the kit, does anyone know where else I could get one cheaper? Will any clutch kit work for an 87? or does it have to be an exact year?

You could go to summit racing and get a better clutch. This is a Hays. EB recommended them when I talked to him, said that they were one of the best...He may chime in and clarify that...I don't want to put words in his mouth. I have this one and don't have any problems and it's held up. I wouldn't trust a clutch from autozone myself.
Hays 90-400

Looks like they are running some kind of special on it. $30 bucks back to spend at summit if you buy it. Could come in handy for some MSD wires. Good Luck...

Will the starter and clutch assembly from the 87 fit onto the 83 22r? The 83 22r I just bought is pretty much complete. I think I am gonna have to take the oil pan off of the 87 and see if it will bolt up to the 83. Will the gasket be different? Or will the 87 oil pan even fit on the 83?

You wont be using a cork gasket for the oil pan, unless you make your own, nobody sells them, not even Toyota, you use a form in place gasket(FIPG).

The 4x4 oil pan, and the starter from the '87 as well as all of the components should bolt right up to the '83.

If the rebuild of the '87 is a short term project, I would do a compression/valve clearance check on the '83 and run it. If comp is good I wouldn't be concerned w/the HG, and if there are no plastic guides in the '83's oil pan, and the t-chain doesn't rattle, I wouldn't worry about it either. However, if you are going to be making trips into the back country or long road trips in it, it would be good for the peace of mind to pull the head and check the valves, replace the T-chain, check the pistons etc., the extra $ should be recouped when you sell the engine later on.

This weekend I plan to install the new valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, and I also bought a new clutch kit for the 83 22r. Hopefully when I drop the oil pan all is good. I hope there is no plastic pieces or any other foreign objects. I am just hoping I can use this 83 for a temp until I get the 87 rebuilt. I have never installed an engine, little lone one on a manual tranny, I hope its not too hard.

If I were you, I would think very seriously about swapping the clutch kit for one with original Toyota parts. I have changed the clutch in our 4Runner 3 times now. The first aftermarket kit caused problems within a year and the parts store gave me a whole new kit on warranty. However, I was never happy with it either and have now changed it again to a genuine Toyota set of parts. Unless you can verify in some manner that the parts are going to be better than Toyota, I would stick with original parts. Normally I don't believe it necessary to use original equipment stuff but my experience in this area leads me to believe one should.

Good luck!
