Getting the Wheeling Fever
Anyone know what size speakers are supposed to fit in the dash on the 85 Gen 1, or what size will fit without hacking things up?
The application guide at Best Buy only goes back to 87, and it says 5 1/4" for the front and rear. While that's true for the rear, I don't see how they would fit in the front. The speaker mounts in the front are on the lower part of the dash, one on each end, and they appear to be oval.

My rig currently has no stereo or speakers in it, but it has at one point. I just want some tunes when I drive it, but I'm doing it on a limited budget.

Thanks!

I have an 88 dash that I might put in to handle the 5-1/4. No way you'll find anything useful to fit in an 87. Don't know about 85.

Do you want them in the dash, or just up front? Assuming 85 doors are the same as later, there should be mounting spots in the bottom front corner behind the panel. I think 5-1/4. Maybe that's what BestBuy is refering to?

The speakers measure approximately 2.5" x 4.5" with 5.25" centers for the screws. The lower front edge of the door has the same mounting holes that the B-pillar speakers have, FWIW.

Well, it's not the 5 1/4" in the dash. The doors appear to have holes behind the panels for 5 1/4", but not exactly. Crutchfield specs a 6 1/2" for the door (with mods), and a 3 1/2" for the dash (again with mods).
I can't find anything so far that's a closer match.

Direct replacement speakers for the dash probably aren't available. I have a split system in my Raider. I run the dash speakers at part volume, the rear 100W Pioneer box speakers with the remainder off the stereo head, and a Jensen amp powering a bass box. It's good enough to hear over the equipment, at road speed with all the windows open, and thunders when something like Primus "My Name is Mud" is playing, or "Regulators" by Warren G. Twenty years past, its just time to change the sound system...you can use the dash speaker mount area for the tweeters, the B-pillar mounts for the mids, and the floor behind the front seats for some subs. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

The dash speakers are 4".

They are readily available from MANY aftermarket suppliers.

4" will not work if you want to keep the ducting that runs from the bottom of the glovebox to the small vertical vent that faces toward the passengers, or between the fuse box and the steering column on the other side. Crutchfield specs the 3.5", but you have to remove those two ducts.
While those ducts do not serve much purpose, I hate taking things out at random.
If 3.5 or 4" are all you can fit in there, I may just forgo those and do the ones in the doors.

I re-speakered mine a few months back. Mounted 5 1/4's in the lower forward front doors. Decided to forego the dash speakers because they give a neglible amount of sound anyway.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Save the dash speakers for a CB. Otherwise, they're useless.

5 1/4" doors, as suggested, maybe 6.5" with some cutting; any size you want in the pillar behind the front seats, also with cutting, but 6.5" will fit w/ minor mods vs. 6" x 9" with some sawing.
