Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 83 22r I am trying to install in my 87 chassis. I have the tranny stabbed in the tranny and 2 bolts in the tranny. But I cant get the engine on the motor mounts. I can get 1 but if I get 1 I cant get the other, is there a trick to this? Also, I was told all the harneses and wiring would be plug and play but a lot of the harneses on the 83 engine done seem to fit any on my 87 chassis just a few, whats the deal?

The wiring harness will almost certainly be different.

The height of the engine mounts - not sure, the block heights differ slightly, you'd need to compare the metal portions of the engine mounts 22r vs 22re

Most of the wiring is the same only the connectors are different. Just change out the connector housing on the motor or the wire harness.

can I just cut the harneses off my 87 engine and splice them onto the 83?

Body Damage is Cool
You should set up the 83 motor with the proper components from the 87 motor, ie. temperature sensors, vacuum switching valves and maybe even the intake manifold and carb. That, or install a Webber carb and scrap all the emissions.

When I was faced with the same choice I switched everything over to a 22RE set-up. I thought it was simpler than all that vacuum hose emissions stuff the carbed motor had and I got a much better running motor as well. -- Matt

I think I am gonna just take off my intake and carb on the 83 and pull the intake and carb off the 87.

Roll Me Over
Just swap the '87 components for the '83's, splicing would take you a lot longer.

For alignment issues, I would unbolt the trany from the X-member and slide it back, then lower down the engine and loosely tighten the engine mounts, then slide the trany up to the engine. It will likely take a few tries getting everything to line up, but I have found it is easier this way.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.
