I have the fan mounted in the hole of the shroud, not very close to the radiator(about the same depth as the stock fan). I have no issues running hot. I know that I have read where installing the fan as close to the radiator as possible is optimal. The reason I chose to mount mine in the shroud, was that then air would be pulled through the entire radiator, not just the center. I never experimented with anything.
With mounting another 16" "pusher" to replace the AC condenser fan, it should work really good, and using a SPAL fan-pwm when it gets hot enough they both will be running full on and pumping more air than just one.
