Are there any downsides to having the 2.6 engine operating cooler? I have installed, what I believe, an original 3- row radiator from a junked out 86. What a difference it made from the 2- row.

From what a mechanic told me when I installed a 325i radiator into my 1971 BMW 2002; As long as it is running in the correct range you will be fine, and colder coolant temps usually translate into more power (density of air greater). My temp gauge sits right on top of the blue which is perfect. Hope this helps
87' Raider: off road package, rebuilt engine with (new) stock tires and alloy wheels but otherwise original.

Also, the cooler the gasoline, the more efficient it is upon combustion. And I think the EGR will work better too, but I don't really know.

as long as thermostat, waterpump, lines are good then it wont make any difference. agreed. a larger radiator wont make it run cooler. it will however help with overheating. your engine temp is regulated by the thermostat. it doesnt matter if you have a 10 row radiator in 30? temps, the engine will still operate at the thermostats opening temp (usually 192-195)

Also less exhaust smoke from the tailpipe. After a few days driving, I am using less fuel, and the dieseling of the engine has disappeared.

With cooler temps, and I mean much cooler, the fuel seems to be combusting efficiently. The heat frome the engine, I believe, affected the EGR valve and thermo valve to run hotter than normal, causing a rich fuel mixture. I dont know too much about how an engine works, but excess heat does play a part on rubber grommets, seals, and plungers.
