Getting the Wheeling Fever
So I went out to start my truck last night and it ran for about 2 seconds before it died. Turns over fine but won't fire. No fuel in the float boal and whe I pulled the fuel lines off of the pump and carb there was nothing in them. Current suspect is the fuel filter but where the heck is it? Tried following the lines but I can't find it for the life of me. Anyone know where it is? Thanks.

the earlier trucks fuel filter was on the passenger side firewall. Yours is probabaly under the vehicle near the fuel tank.

Thanks. Thats what the Haynes manual says too but its definitely not by the fuel tank unless it's on top of it. I'll take a closer look at the firewall. Saw somewhere that it is located under the intake manifold. Anyone know if this is true?

hey, I have an 87 CARB PU and the fuel filter isn't on the firewall passenger side. If I get a minute tomorrow I'll crawl under it and see if I can find the filter.

Rear fender (wheel-well)

Between the gas tank and frame. Actually, if I remember right, the clip that holds the filter is attached to the inside of the frame back there.

Try running it on some starter fluid or pour a little straight gas in the carb and see if it runs. It is possible that you got some air in the lines, and running it this way can prime the system. This will also tell you if your getting spark.

Also make 100 percent sure your not just out of gas. Dont go by the gauge. Check the tank itself.

What about the fuel pump on the block? Did you pull the line going INTO the pump FROM the tank? Was that dry?

Get a 5 gallon can of gas and run a line from the can directly to the fuel pump, bypassing the filter. That should rule out problems with the filter.

Could also be leaks in the fuel lines coming from the tank, causing the pump to suck air.

Hopefully its something as simple as a clogged fuel filter. If it is clogged, you will want to figure out what clogged it, and where it came from, which means dropping the tank, and having it cleaned.

Awesome thanks for all of the great advice and hints!

Well after leaving the fuel lines disconnected for a bit fuel began to stream out of the line, so I hooked it back up to the pump and still nothing. Must be the pump I decide so I go downtown and pick up a new one from napa, come back and try to start it just for the heck of it and it fires right up. Strangest thing. I'm thinking maybe it was a bad vapor lock situation? What do you think would have caused this to happen?
