Also check the power brake booster hose for leaks, leaning out #4.
I diagnose egr this way. Using a 3/8"npt tap, I block off the egr passage and trash the valve. This only works in no smog inspection jurisdictions...
Seriously, the vac hoses are VERY easy to screw up, and no really good diagrams in the FSM. I have managed to straighten some out before, but it took hours with both diagrams and the truck in front of me. Lotsa little hoses and nipples and lectro- and thermo-valves in there...

Bringing back from the dead...
So I put in premium fuel, and now it only pings under load (going up hill, accelerating,) in 3rd or higher. I looked at the vac hoses but couldn't see a problem (I actually replaced a lot of them).
When you block off the EGR passage, what do you mean by trash the valve? As in no more EGR passage?

Throw it away.
I'd recheck the ignition timing. Disco and plug the vac hose to the distributor, and with a timing light (engine idle speed around 800) set the timing to 7* before top dead center.
If the timing is advanced too far, you will have more accel power, and cruise power will suffer.

Just to clarify:
Is this a 3.0L V6, or a 2.6L in-line 4 ???

The dist may be off a tooth, too. Hand rotate the motor to dead on the zero mark on the timing cover. The dist rotor should be pointed at about 9:30, or 3:30.

You know,I've got the same problem after my rebuild? At about 60km/hr It sound like a bearing going, or knocking from fuel. I've got about 12000km on my rebuild & I also let the machine shop where I had it done listen ,but i didn't know at the time when it actually did it(the knocking that is), not at 40km/hr anyway

Another oddity:
If I am in the higher gear and try to accelerate up any slight incline, it knocks. But if I then just punch the pedal to full throttle, it (seemingly) stops knocking. My only guess to this is that there is more fuel getting into the combustion chamber= cooler temps.
