axle play question

While working on my ball joints, I noticed that I can push/pull on my axle shaft into the steering knuckle and it moves in and out a 1/4 inch or so. Tried same on other axle and it seems there is no play, although that side is on the ground. Anyone know if this is OK? Don't want to pull the hub (cone washers #$%^&!! ) and check the end bolt needlessly.
