Need a Spot
Hi you all.

I want to know if someone of this forum can tell me a way to get a better milage out of my truck a 1995 montero SR 3.5L DOHC with A/T. I life down here in central america and I imported it from Sacramento California. Is there a way maybe by eliminating the catalist system or by putting in smaller inyector? I have seen bigger engines like toyota V6 4.0L of the 4-Runner that makes up to 30kms per gallon versus my 20kms/gallon. Please help me out.

Regards,

Arnold Richters

A well running 3.5 DOHC should be good for ~30kms. What is the state of your motor? How many miles; overall maintenance record; any other running issues; top shelf parts used for last tune-up; are you running stock wheels/tires; etc...?

Body Damage is Cool
Install manual locking front hubs. When you're driving, your front wheels are permanently connected to the front axles, differential & driveshaft, which means that your front drivetrain is always being turned by the front wheels whenever you are driving. Manual locking hubs will allow you to disconnect the wheels from the axles when you are driving in normal street conditions, reducing the amount of drag & eliminating the power usage that it takes to overcome that drag.

While I haven't personally done this to my 95 SR yet (it's on the list of things to do), others have & have reported noticeable mileage improvements.

Summit Racing has the Superwinch hubs here:

Other than what MontyMcV has already posted above regarding maintenance & tire size, you should switch your engine oil & drivetrain fluids to a synthetic oil, which should improve mileage somewhat by reducing friction.

Regularly check (and if necessary, top-off) your tire pressures.

If you do a lot of highway driving, remove any roof-mounted devices (rack, lights) until such times as you need them to minimize drag.

Remove anything from the truck that you don't need regularly. Carrying around a couple hundred pounds of tools, wood, sand-bags, etc, will harm your gas mileage.

Make sure your air filter is a fresh one.

Modify your driving style (eliminate quick-starts/gradual acceleration, reducing throttle sooner when approaching a stop, driving at more moderate speeds).

Regular maintenance (as mentioned above).

Whatever you do, don't replace the injectors with smaller ones - that's asking for a lean fuel mixture and a blown engine.

Put the tranny mode selector switch in hold position. 2nd gear starts and earlier upshifts and later downshifts all keep the motor in a lower rpm range. Less air thru the motor, so less fuel thru the motor. Drive it like you have a raw egg between foot and go pedal.

Sometimes my tranny selecter gets bumped into the "hold" position. Every time it happens i think something is wrong with my truck.
