Wolverine Block Heaters

Instead of knocking out the freeze plug and wasting my brand new antifreeze flush, this product seems like a good alternative. Does anyone have experience with this brand? And this isn't a question of whether or not I need a block heater, North Dakota winters can be brutal...

Which product are you looking at? The drain plug insert?

thanks for the link. i was just in the middle of looking for a block heater for my aunts pathfinder.

shes moving to nome and it gets cold there.

after some googling it looks like its been in the boat market for quite some time and seems to be a great product. seems to focus more on the diesels where oil viscosity is much more significant and much larger engines are in use. looks like it is a great option for smaller gas engines.

im looking at the model 9 and the 110v battery warmer for her 03 pathfinder. just gotta take a look at the oil pan and see if it will work.

To be honest I didn't see the drain plug insert. I was thinking about the heating pads that attach to the bottom of the oil pan. BUT, if the drain plug insert would work, then it may last longer... Again, opinions/advice welcome

i doubt that insert will work for you. its for detroit, cummins, or a cat diesel.

on the other hand....the pathfinder im talking about is on its way to san juan island and shes lived there for 8 years with no block heaters of any kind in her other cars/trucks with no issues. -30 temps in alaska is another story though.

what im trying to say is its unnecessary here in washington IMO

Yeah I go to school in North Dakota, that's why I bought the truck I will be starting the car in negative temps regularly.

I think our lowest recorded temp this last winter was -35...

The other ones *work* but for my money/power consumption, nothing beats the freeze plug block heater, IMHO. As long as you're careful knocking out the frost plug (rather than knocking *in*) its not really a huge deal to install... easier on the 3.0V6 than it was on my 2.5TDi, I can tell you that!

I've had the inline coolant hose heater as well, but it didn't do near the job. The pad type are okay as supplemental oil warmers, but the frost plug type heats the coolant directly in the water passages... in winter it turns my truck from a rattly-smoke-machine to a smooth....well... okay still rattly... less smoky, start-on-the-first-turn kitten.

As always, YMMV.

I just hate wasting good coolant

How much do you have to drain?

Just roll your truck on its side.

Okay...never mind.
