Did you have to replace the contacts or did you just clean them up a bit?

The steering wheel that was on the truck when I bought it was not the right one and had no contacts. The PO had drilled a hole in the dash and mounted a push button and run wires straight out to the battery.

I went to the junkyard and got a steering wheel that had the contact ring and center piece off of a 4runner and put that on the truck. Note that I took the contact ring off and cleaned it thoroughly and used a steel wire brush to make it shiny. It was corroding, but cleaned up very nicely. The contact pin in the column (original) looked good, so I just wiped it with alcohol/q-tip and filed the end gently till it was shiny. The left-over alcohol was saved for future medicinal purposes.
