Well I have pulled the tensioner and pulley and they show no obvious problems. They look pretty good actually. The timing belt is pretty crusty so I am going to get a new one. Now I am not sure where what was causing the problem. When I ran it with the cover off the tensioner pulled was shaking at the same rate as the sound so it really appeared that's where the sound was coming from. The bearing on the pulled and the pivot bushing look good. The tensioner has descent tension but I wonder if it was stronger when new. I suppose I can replace that too. What do you guys suggest? Maybe replace those two parts, put the belt on, and see what happens.

On a side not the marks on the timing belt did not match up with the ones on the cam pulleys and the crank pulley even before I took the belt off. The lame Chiltons I have said there was a change from 1995 to 1995.5 on where the alignment marks are on the timing belt back cover. Have you guys ran into that? I just need to be sure the new belt has the correct marks for my year which is a 95.

THE HUDRAULIC TENSIONER TAKES 200 LB,S OF FORCE TO MOVE THE PISTON, IF YOU CAN MOVE IT AT ALL WITH YOU BARE HANDS IT IS DONE FOR, ALL V6 TIMING MARKS ON THE SOHC ENG ARE IN THE SAME SPOT, AND ALL USE THE SAME BELT FROM 92-97 TROOPER OR RODEO, , THE ONLY DIFFERENT ONE IS THE DOHC TROOPER ENG , AND THEY A RE EVEN PRETTY CLOSE TO THE SOHC , BUT THE BELT IS MUCH LONGER , JERRY, SEARCH AROUND ON THIS SITE A LITTLE BIT THERE HAVE BEEN HUNDREDS OF T BLT CHANGES AND THERE IS PLENTY OF VERY GOOD INSTRUCTIONS HERE , JERRY

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just got the new tensioner and I wanted to see just how much tighter the new spring was. I pulled the pin that holds the pushrod in place. It felt a good amount stiffer than the old one. I then went to push it back in and it only went 1/2 way! I tried to put some more force on it to get it in and now it only moves about 1/6 the way down! Are the new ones designed to not go in all the way and just add pressure and then stay out? Maybe it's defective.

You are not supposed to pull the pin until it is installed and in place.

Good luck,
Michael

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well today I got the timing belt marks aligned perfectly with the marks on the cam and crank pulleys. I put the old tensioner in just to see if the old crusty belt was the problem. I cranked the engine and it wouldn't start. Any ideas? Tomorrow I'll double check the alignment marks.

I checked the alignment marks and they are now off. How could the marks be perfectly aligned and then not aligned later? It must be slipping but there are no signs of it.

THE MARKS NOR THE BELT IS SLIPPING, WHEN YOU YOU ALIGN THE MARKS AND THEN CRANK THE ENG OVER THE MARKS WILL MOVE UN TILL IT MAKES A LOT OF REVOLUTIONS , THIS IS NORMAL, THIS IS CALLED A WALKING BELT, MEANING IT WILL WALK AROUND THE PULLEYS WITHOUT TOUCHING THE SAME SPOT FOR MANY MANY TURNS , IT KEEPS FROM WEARING THE BELT OUT, JERRY

Thanks for the info. I figured it may be like that. I am at a loss right now though. The only thing I can think of is to take the belt off, get the new tensioner, and try it again. If it doesn't work after that maybe I'll just push the truck off a cliff.

Are there any other alignment tricks to this? Besides lining up all the marks does the engine need to be at TDC or anything else need to be done? I don't see how I can line up the all the marks and it still doesn't start up. The only thing I can think of is that the belt slipped.

Go back and check your marks. You don't have to have them line up with the belt, persay. As long as the crank and camshafts are lined up with their marks, then you know it is correct.

Go back and figure out what part you forgot to plug back in, is the other option.

Good Luck,
Michael

I really love the comedic relief, I needed the laugh this morning.
You should be able to reset the tensoner with a vise.
Yes, you can get a 1/2" impact gun on the bolt once you remove the radiator. Removing the rad makes the job much more enjoyable anyway.
Spend the cash and replace the pulley set as well as the tensioner and belt. This is not a job you want to do twice because of a bad bearing in a pulley.

I laugh only because I have been there, and it didn't seem funny at the time to me either!

I'm at 250,000 miles on my '96, so I guess I should start thinking about changing out the belt again.
BTW, The stock belt stripped out on me at 130K, 500 miles from home, in the winter, up hill both ways.......
I learned that you can, in fact, change a timing belt in a parking lot with what you can beg, borrow, and rent from autozone.
