No cat - never had one (at least not while I had it) - major exhaust leak where the downpipe hooks to the exhaust that goes out the back - that couldn't cause problems, could it?

I've thought of the torque, I guess I'll visit that soon.
2 row radiator.
Plugs look good - nothing out the back. (see above about the defroster smell).
Thanks!

Checked the fan clutch, it's only a few months old - stopped immediatly when dead cold. Now check it when it's hot. Frank

With the engine fully warmed (but not into the "running hot" situation I'm asking about) the fan turns 3-4 complete revolutions after the engine is shut off.
Been out since 6:00a.m. working on the truck, going back as soon as I grab a bite to eat. More later.

Check it when the engine is in the "hot" zone. It should lock up. If not, the coil isn't allowing full hookup.

My 86 used to run hot, until I took out the 2- row and installed the original 3- row. Now it runs like it did 10 years ago.

Frank Oh crap...I wasn't thinking about that clearly. Yeah, it should lock up when the engine's warm/hot and be loosey-goosey when the engine's cold. My bad.

Actually, you were partly correct. It should be stiff when cold - otherwise, the fluid has leaked out. When cold, you shouldn't be able to spin it.
But as the fluid warms up, the fan will spin a little easier until the coil locks the clutch.... which allows a gradual engagement depending on temperature. If the coil goes bad, the fan will spin when hot even when it's full of fluid.

I was thinking one should be able to spin the fan easier by hand when the engine was cold, the purpose of the slippage being to allow the engine to warm up, and once warmed up the clutch should lock up allowing more cooling airflow. I guess it's been a while since I gave my fan a spin by hand. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.fivethirty.com/images/shrug.gif)
