My Jeep has GM V6 engine and a T10 transmission both from the late 1970's. I just got this rig, did a fair a bit of work and went for a road test. I'm darn sure the shifting pattern is up side down. Is that even possible? First gear is at the bottom, second straight up, third is down and to the right and fourth is up and to the right. I took out the Hurst linkage and cleaned it up and replaced the bushings but I swear I put it back together the way I took it apart.

Reverse is (push down on the stick) and to the left and up. Are you telling me that that is the right pattern for a T10? Basically opposite to any four speed I ever drove?

The first question why a t10 in a jeep, are you drag racing it? First gear is 3:1 Ick.

SD That was a popular conversion in the 70's. Hell, I ran a 64 CJ-6 with a Chevy 283 and a GM Saginaw 4 speed. This was before swapping truck trannies into Jeep became popular. This is where Advance Adapters got their start. Muncies, T-10's, Saginaws, Ford T&C 3 & 4 speeds were popular conversions.

You must not have driven as many 4-speeds as I have -- I started in the 1950's.
Generally (not a hard and fast rule). if the 1st gear is a "granny" gear (lower than 5:1), then 1st gear on a 4 or 5 speed tranny will be to the left and up. This places the normal starting gear (2nd gear) low and left, where it is on a 3-speed tranny. However, if the 1st gear is a "normal" starting gear, then 1st gear on a 4 or 5 speed tranny will be down and to the left, where a 3-speed 1st gear is normally located.
Reverse gears are a crap shoot, and there doesn't seem to be a "general" rule about them. On a 3-speed, they're up and left, but that's about the only thing that's standard.

If I remember correctly, it's possible to get things turned around depending on which way the shift levers on the tranny are pointing (up or down) and which shift arm you have it connected to on the shifter. Which shifter do you have? Hurst Competition Plus? You should basically have a modified H pattern with first gear up and to the left and reverse down and to the left (I think).

The shift levers point up. In other words the rods that connect the linkage to the levers are below the bolts that stick out of the tranny. I didn't think that was a normal shift pattern but then I was born in the 50's - not driving. Superdawg is right though - this gearing is way to high. First gear in low range even is not near low enough for bush wackin. What's the best way to lower these gears? The Hurst shifter is a "Super Shifter."

I'm just learning SuperDawg. Is the T-18 a new transmission or a new transfer case? I'm pretty sure I've already got a T-18 transfer case. Can I just put a lower gear in the T-case to make low range lower or do I have to swap out the transmission?
