In my ENTIRE life I haven't heard of shocks getting HARDER till your post. Could it be that you don't ride in her vehicle much and so you are NEW to the ride of those shocks? Traditionally shocks get weaker..but not harder as they grow older. MODERN shocks last 150K most times. My wifes had 160K on them when we traded the ride off and they were stock shocks. They might have been a bit softer than new but little if any at all.
