I Have an 85 toyota p/u. it origionally had a 22r. I replaced the engine with a 22re but kept the carb. Has not run right since. It flattens out at around 40 mph. I put a weber carb on and it still does the same. Any ideas?

I have checked timing, it is good. I have adjusted the carb. Checked the coil. Replaced catalytic converter. I have done everything I know to do. I am wondering if putting a carb. on a motor, that had a fuel injector on it, is part of my problem. If so, what can I do? Do I need to change anything else?

Body Damage is Cool
Using the carb on an EFI engine shouldn't cause any issues, as long as the original intake manifold was swapped with the carb to the other engine, as well as the vacuum advance distributor, and connected properly. EGR system OK?

did you just replace the engine (head and shortblock)??

if not, what did you use from the 22RE in the 22R vehicle.

If I understand correctly, that it is the 22re intake but w/ the carb on top, that is probbaly your problem. The intakes are different. Honestly I don't really see how you did that, didn't think it would bolt up. Guess so?
If you want the carb instead of injection (why??), you need everything from the top end of the carbed motor except the head (heads/blocks are indetical IIRC).

Just so we have more info as to what you have - what year model is the "new" longblock 22re (block and head) off of?

I'm sorry if I mislead you. I used the old intake (22r) on the new 22re long block.

For the 22R, carbed engine, poor acceleration/hesitation, the FSM checklist is:
1. Fuel line clogged
2. Float level too low
3. Accelerator pump faulty
4. Power Valve faulty
5. Choke Valve closed (hot engine)
6. Choke System

I would add to that list with timing chain position (is it on right) and serious vacuum leak. A can of carb cleaner sprayed locally around the intake and carb will help find any serious leaks.

I would strongly suggest getting a FSM that is in line with the year of the engine and follow the diagnosis procedures for your condition. FSMs are free and located
