I've been using Castrol Magnatec Diesel at 5000K. After looking at some of the intervals posted on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ I wonder if I couldn't go a bit longer. What are you guys using? Thanks!

My 3.2 Di-D's service schedule allows up to 10000kms between services, provided 50ppm diesel is used.
I change at 5000-6000 in any case.
I would not advise 10k on the 4D56 engine!

I use Quaker State HDX 15w40, every 5000 kms.
Diesels run dirty, I have heard of people changing it every 2500 kms.

these old diesels always run black oil...after 5 minutes of running on fresh oil its black already. its not a big deal, if you run synthetic you can get 6000KM no problem out of the oil.
just look at how much industrial diesel engines (ie. generators, hydraulic pumps, whatever...) get used have a massive lack of maintenance. and they run forever.
my dad owns a service rig company and his light plants have 2.2L Isuzu diesel engines and they are poorly maintained but run for 50-60,000 hours problem free.
diesels are alot tougher than you think.

Nigel's right. A lot also has to do with how and where you're driving it. My regular drive is an hour on the highway, full warm-up, no starting and stopping, no quick starts/shutdowns, and a few minutes of slow speed at the end, followed by a minute or two of idle. This is 10 months of the year. I push my interval to 8500kms, fresh filter every time, synthetic Rotella.
Not saying this works for everyone, but it all depends on the conditions. As always, with any oil topic, everyone has an opinion, and the only right one is your own. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I'll second Phil's comments. Especially if you are running synthetic, you can go beyond 5000K. I've been alternating between Rotella-T (bought locally) and Amsoil (Cousin runs an oil change shop in Sask, so I get it cheap when I'm there.) I'm doing 7500K or so between changes. More often in the cold.

Well I did my oil change today and I even cut open the filter just for fun. Other than black oil I found nothing in the filter. I was interested as my last 5000 K's were through BC, up and down the Coquihalla, etc, and I was driving it hard. 100 kph on the hill up and out of Kamloops, so I was interested to see how the wear and tear was going. I found no metal at all. It is good to know that nothing is wearing out of the ordinary.

you should never find metal in your oil filter...if you do, its a bigger problem than wear and tear haha.
everybody says diesels run forever...and its for a very good reason, they are WAY overbuilt and can easily take a lack of maintenance (not saying that is recommended) but oil changes do not need to be as frequent as gas jobbers.
