Anyone know the difference between an NP 231J and a NP 231D? I know that the J is for Jeep and the D is for Dodge, and that there's a C one for Chevy, but what are the physical differences, and can I use a SYE kit for a J on a D case?

Anyone know the difference between an NP 231J and a NP 231D? D HD, and C HD units have 6 pinion planataries, and 2 inch wide chains. (none HD units have smaller chain, and only 3 planet gears. can I use a SYE kit for a J on a D case? Prob so. I used a "J" kit on my CHD unit. The SYE components replace the Mainshaft, tailhousing, and rear yoke with a fixed yoke obviously. The entire transfer case has to come apart, but it's not too involved. One thing to consider is that the SYE units only offer cable drive speedo's and if you have a VSS back there now, it's a goner. (Unless you machine the gear off, and press fit a reluctor ring on it or something like that)

That's pretty much what I figured. Worst case I can probably get a 231J case and swap the front half of mine onto it. (Unless you machine the gear off, and press fit a reluctor ring on it or something like that) I do have a cable drive speedo, so I'm ok. They do offer super short SYE kits that have a VSS instead of a speedo drive, but they're about twice the price of the normal kits.

If you don't plan on having A\C or your montero doesn't have A\C already just put the rad infront of the support and the hoses can run thru where the stock rad sat into the new spot thats what this guy did on his V8 swap in aus i don't have the picture any more but it came out better than hacking up the rad support. ![[Linked Image]](http://pics.montypics.com/lordtrunks/2005-11-20/1132512005_v8_pajero.jpg)

I had been thinking about putting the rad in front of the rad support too, but I was not sure if it would work. I think I'll try it before I hack.

The Super Short does come with a VSS. You can also find a VSS that takes the place of the cable drive end too.
It sounds like it is not needed for this app, but it is very possible with junkyard parts.

Well, I drove the Dakota arround for a week or so, no issues at all, no check engine light, runs smooth as silk, so now it's time to hack it up <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" /> Got a little done tonite, pulled off the skid plates, front and rear driveshafts, and transfer case. Not bad for an hour and a half with no air tools. Going down to my Dad's this weekend to pick up the engine hoist, hopefully get the motor out next week.
Also, FYI, Advanced adapters got back to me and their 231 SYE kit will work on all versions of the case.

Just thought I'd update/bump. Engine's almost ready to come out of the dakota, down to exhaust and engine mounts that need to be disconnected. Wiring harness is very nice on those, engine harness and ECU is completely separate from the rest of the truck harness, and is connected to the rest of the truck with two plugs. I'll hopefully get it ready to come out tomorrow night and pull it friday aftenoon. I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow or friday also.
