I've only used MS Streets & Trips vintage 2001 or so. I like it just fine but I need to buy some software for a new computer and I'm wondering what other programs are out that people like. I have to be able to use it offline, so things like Google Earth (which I LOVE) won't cut it.

I've seen bits and pieces of National Geographic Backroads Explorer, but they are a bit pricey. At least I thought they were expensive. I just looked on Ebay and found a few copies going for cheap.

Any suggestions?

Because my wife was forever getting lost, I bought her a Garmin E-trex Legend and the associated software. When she gets lost now, she can call and tell me where she is. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I used to use Fugawi Marine ENC a lot - but they also have a cheaper version for about $135. You can use just about any format.

IMO fugawi rocks - the best out there for the money. We would scan charts and use Canvas with the GIS pack to georeference them, save as a GeoJpeg, and use it with fugawi for navigation.

Take a look at Oziexplorer as the base software, you add the data.

TomTom for car navigation is the best, turn by turn directions and a 3D display. Very user friendly even my wife can figure it out. It's wallet size and you can carry it with you if you need to explore the city on foot.

For $144 you get the GPS with the North America database built in. Just keep using the old Streets and Trips on the laptop

Roll Me Over
if this is for a static PC, believe me when i say S&T 2008 improves on all versions of S&T.

i have delorme's topo 6 and street atlas 5 (or 6) and i really hate the interfaces on the delorme's products.

i used to have national geographics mapping s/w too, but i found the screens too messy since they essentially used the scanned paper maps.

when you go mobile with S&T 2008, the gps functions are improved too. only thing missing from it, is a nice birds eye view, instead of just a overhead view.
