O.K, I know that when my heater fan won't run on low that I need to replace the resistor, but I can't find it...traced the wiring back from the blower.

Nice pics, BTW. I like your truck.

I'm sure someone will jump on here and answer your question who has one that old or has dealt with one. My memory as a Yota mechanic from those days was that the resistor was mounted inside the housing next to, or almost right at the blower, and was a PITA to get in and out. I don't clearly rememember doing this to an early truck, but it seems like I replaced several of these back in the early 80's. I was looking around on the "net" for ya' but didn't see anything yet.

Richard's right. Look at the heater blower housing on the driver's side (well, left on our trucks over here), under the dash, and you'll see a 3-wire conector plugged into it. Remove the connector, remove the little screw, and out it comes. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I had a good crawl under the dash and located the little ba$tard...under the drivers (right hand side) dash, pull the air duct out of the way, limbo my way in and perform delicat surgery with a light in my mouth, while the dog sniffs at my bum crack.
Got it out, yep low speed coil is broken...try to solder it, too dirty, so I replace with another piece of fine wire...now my low speed is the same as medium.
Went to Toyota and ran screaming from the parts counter...$52.00 plus GST (10%)
I'm gunna go to radio shack, get a couple of resistors of the right resistance and fix it myself. YEE-HHAWWWW!

...anyway, enough of my bum crack.

By the way, would anyone know how many amps the blower fan pulls? I need to know to get some resisters.

That's crazy. I just paid $24 for one and I'm sure they're cheaper in the US.

Not sure what the rated blower motor current is, but it is probably up in the 5-10 amp range. Those resistors are pretty high wattage parts, I would wager the stock coils get pretty darn hot under load (like maybe to the point of glowing red hot), they are made of nichrome wire from the looks of it (same stuff used for heating elements).

I know on my VW, the blower resistor is a big multiple tap wire wound unit, probably about a 50 watt rating judging from the size of the part. Might be the best way to go with a unit like that as you can move the tap points around on the resistor coil to adjust the blower speeds. On the VWs, cars with A/C have the small open coil resistor shoved into the blower duct and those have problems blowing out as well. On the cars w/o A/C, they have the big wire wound ceramic resistor out in the blower air intake under the hood and those never fail.

I would have paid up to $25 for one, but not $50. Toyota genuine parts always spell $$$$$$. I even went to Repco, but they don't sell these type of parts.
