I soldered a pair of the ceramic resistors from a 1/10th scale R/C car in parallel across the low speed terminals on my 1st gen. years ago when I was young and broke. I drove it another 18 months or so and never had a problem with it. I have no idea of the resistance or wattage rating of those bad boys though.
