3RZ-FE 2.7L exhaust questions... #899371 08/08/08 06:40 PM

Hi All,

Recently purchased a 2000 4runner with the 3RZ-FE 2.7L engine to replace my 1988 4runner.

On my 1988 4runner (22RE), at the suggestion of engnbldr, I put on a 2" pipe between the cat and muffler, then 2 1/4" pipe out of the muffler. This produced a quite noticeable increase in throttle response and power at WOT.

since 3RZ 4runners are so rare, I'd like to hear what owners of 3RZ Tacos are using for an aftermarket exhaust system, including aftermarket headers or just freer flowing exhaust pipes and mufflers- what size pipe(s) did you go with? And which muffler? I realize that there are tradeoffs between noise level and restriction, but I'd like to keep my new system as quiet as possible.

Any feedback will be appreciated!

riverrat, according to engnbldr, you should go with 2" from the cat to the muffler, then 2 1/4" after the muffler just as with the 22RE, since these motors are of similar displacement.

Just having a little fun with info that came to light via an email communication with engnbldr after I had posed the question here and got no responses...

Haha well thank you. At least if anyone's searching in here with your same question, they'll get a good answer!

Lots of 3rz people over on customtacos.com... thorley came out with a new header for them which gives a nice 10-15hp dyno proven. i'd run a 2.25" exhaust with that for best flow...

Yes I've been lurking over on the CT site. Do you know if the Thorley will definitely fit on a 3RZ 4runner? From what I have learned, some 3RZ headers fit Tacos but not 4runners, e.g. the one made by NW Offroad, which is the only tri-y design I have found.

Also, where can I buy a Thorley and/or get some tech questions answered?
