USA is third world now, we only get leftovers
It sure feels that way sometimes. I don't understand why we can't get more diesel vehicles over here. Having rented a Peugeot 407 HDi (Turbo Diesel), 2.L, 6 speed while in Spain this summer, I was amazed at the performance it had... but more importantly, the mileage it got for a sedan that size. With 4 people and luggage, we averaged around 38 MPG highway/city driving combined.... and I don't pussyfoot around on the highways either.... average speed was around 90 MPH. Roughly 500 miles on 13 gallons of diesel (although it was about $8 per gallon) Can someone give me a good reason WHY we don't have more choices for diesel vehicles here in the USA. Note: All calculations above were to the best of my ability. Van

I found two gas stations across from each other down here that don't have ethanol, my corolla is back to ~38-40mpg average commuting.

Can someone give me a good reason WHY we don't have more choices for diesel vehicles here in the USA.
Emissions. Plain and simple. US emissions are MUCH more strict than that of other countries. And as of 2007, its gotten even worse with particulate filters.

Somehow I can't imagine that thing has worse emmissions than our 8, 10 or even 12 cylinder diesel pickup trucks.
Even new they just puke out black smoke when they take off from a stoplight. Sounds like a conspiracy but I have to wonder how much of it is lobbyists for Chevron and GM keeping them out.
If we all buy diesels who's gonna buy the $4.50 premium gas???
Doesn't Switzerland has much higher emmissions standards than we do?

Sorry, but I don't buy that answer, Europe use particulate filters also..... any proof? I've been searching US diesel vehicles compared to European CO2 levels.... only problem is I can't find to many matches.
