If you realy want to gain HP on your SOHC a Ford Probe exhaust manifold will bolt right up. If you found a good Probe turbo and manifold for cheap you might be able to make it work. You will have to find a way to clock the turbo to clear the motor mounts but it might work. Other than that you can try all the old reliable stuff. a good open air filter like a K&N, a 2 1/4" exhaust with a quality turbo muffler like a MagnaFlow or Flow Master, and convert your clutch fan to an electric. All this might be good for a 15 to 25 HP, not quite the 50 but every little bit helps. No body makes kit for any of this but if you are handy most of this stuff is posted here on the Wire.

Hey, Dennis, do you have the SOHC motor? If so how much more HP did you get from the manifold and/or the turbo?

No mine is a DOHC. The reason I know about the probe manifold is my little brother had a SOHC and needed an exhaust manifold gasket to pass inspection. I had him bring it over to change it. My boy is into Probes so instead of going to the parts store I tried a gasket out of one of his gasket kits and it fit. I do know a Probe turbo engine without the turbo is quite lame, add the turbo and it realy wakes it up. Put a turbo on a non turbo Probe engine a look for low 14s in the 1/4 mile.
I plan on putting a stock Probe turbo on my DOHC motor but we will have to make everything custom. I am building a 2 1/2" exhaust now which is to big for a non turbo Sportage but should work well with the turbo. As soon as he gets another Probe on the road we are going to start the turbo install.

What year was that ford probe gasket set? If you don't know that; what was the engine size? Lol, sorry to ask so many questions. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

by the way... if you decide to swap in the DOHC engine, you will also need the computer/wiring harness for it to work.

Back to the probe... any idea how much work it would be to get the turbo to clear the engine mount on the sohc?

The gasket was for a 89 2.2L 12 valve engine. Ask all the questions you want, thats what this site is for.

My brother doesn't have his Kia any more so its hard to say how the Probe turbo will fit, It's going to be a squeeze in my DOHC.

so lets say I found a cheap probe exhaust manifold and turbo, and lets say it fit without any issues.. other than new exaust and plumbing in a new airfitler and plumbing from the turbo to the intake, is there anything else i would have to do? Do i need an intercooler? I'm a turbo retard but i've got an ultimate set of tools...

I have been told since we have a Mas Airflow Sencer (MAS) instead of an Air Meter the computer should be OK if you don't get crazy with the boost, 6 to 8 Lbs should be max. You should also find a way to run an intercooler and premimum fuel. I do think with the Probe exhaust manifold the motor mount will be in the way, thats why I said you may have to reclock the turbo.

As far as I know the intake should be ok without to much boost, I will find out on mine when I do it.

Dennis,

Nice 61!!! Looks just like my 64, but with a different grill and the fact that it's a 4x4.

Even have the same step side bed and the same faded Ford red paint.

351 or 302 under the hood?
