I am getting a CEL, so instead of a cone filter I should try a regular K and N filter for more performance?

That CEL could be one of a thousand things!

Think about it for a second, the air temp sensor reads the temp of the air going into the engine, the only way youre going to throw a CEL is if you have it to close to the exhaust, or you have the sensor touching metal and it's grounding out! The OEM sensor is located on the exhaust side of the engine inside a little plastic box, do you really think that little plastic box offers much in the way of heat insulation?

I never had an issue with the temp sensor on my sporty, and I've ran it in extreme temps! +40 to -40 with no problems.

Locate the air temp sensor away from the exhaust manifold, make sure it is not grounding out, point the sensor so it is pointing towards the firewall, build a little heat shield if you are really worried about the heat affecting it.

Below are some pics of mine, I located my sensor between the cone filter and the firewall using a stock airbox mounting bracket, I fabbed up a shield around the cone filter and cut a hole and installed a small scoop on the hood to draw cold air from the out side, I also cut a small hole in the wheel arch to also draw air in from the outside and to act as a drain if any water were to get inside.

If you have a CEL because you have a cone filter then you are the first person I know for this to happen too.

two things for consideration

1. just think why the senser is there and what is the information that gives to ECU, and what ECU does with this info..
in extreme hot condition it alters the mixture...
in extreme cold condition since the air been cold is also thicker, it makes the mixture rich.
do you belive that a loose sensor giving wrong info to ecu will not affect performance?

2. Your cone installation is not " just put a cone there" you have fab a fabulus work PREVENTING the dissadvantages I mention since
1. you have located the sensor very close to the cone so the info is relatively correct
2. you have 2 frech air inputs one on the hood and one at the wheel arch, that normaly dont exist..

( in no way I am in a dipute ok?? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Just dicusing it.... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />)

By the way at this momment I am testing a BMC barrel type cone filter.....

higher than 3.000 rpms it gives something
lower than that I think is woerst than stok box.. I think...
What is your impression?

That sounds like about what mine is doing, low end not so great, upper end better.
As for the sensor, it is disconnected so that's why it's showing a code, and it sounds like I should build a box to isolate the filter from the engine heat and remove the cold temperature sensor from the original box and locate it near the cone filter.

..... or ( as a friend of mine did ) open a hole to the rubber tube conecting the cone to the MAF and place the sensor there....

will someone PLEASE explain to me the theory behind a "cold air intake/cone filter"? You take the stock air box, with is sucking air from out the front of the car, and put a cone filter on the end of the intake INSIDE of the engine bay, where the temps are much much higher than whats getting sucked in from outside with the stock box?

The real theory behind a cone filter is more air flow. Plus i think in theory, the less plastic the air has to flow through, the cooler it would be, maybe not. But i would think the air would stay cooler just using the metal parts of the intake. And of course moving faster. Plus at slow speeds, the plastic between the hood and intake should be close to engine bay temp.

I have a CONE filter and have never thrown a code. I drilled the top distal end and implanted the temp sensor there. Although I did not close the warm air off (like Iron Mike)<should have> but that is not a problem.

Now back on topic on ways to gain more horse power----I changed the FUEL FILTER and my Sporty runs a lot better. WOW! a Ten dollar filter and better performance. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

The Fuel filter is located on the bottom of the intake (in a tight little spot). Passenger side. Make sure that you engine is cooled down first. I burned my arm! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

No kidding it's tight. We couldn't get the tools on the lines properly, and now i have hose clamps holding a new rubber line on one side of the filter. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />
