My '83 is definatly going to have a little new life breathed into it. My 22R is still clicking right along, but it just doesn't satisfy. I've built a chevy V8 converted toyota, so I know exactly what the cost is to build a strong 350 with plenty of high-performance parts. Here's the problem: I don't want another V8, but to build a performance 22R is going to cost almost as much? I've thought about going with a 4.3, but gas milage and another conversion and bla bla and so fourth and so on makes it just too much trouble. Any specific areas where I can focus my money to get the most horsepower on the cheap? I know that most chevy horsepower is in the heads, same for the 22R? What do I need to avoid? What "high performance" parts are bogus? Any info is helpful, so "thank ya'll" right up front.

Thank you! That was exactly what I was looking for. The guy seems really knowledgable. Reading that just did away with a bunch of preconceived notions on what I needed! What amazed me was learning how a big bore job really wouldn't pay dividends compared to other things. That was the kind of thing I was looking for: where to spend my money to get the most out of it. A buddy of mine followed EB's advice for the performance build, and gains were very noticeable in his '84 x-cab turning 37's. Unfortunately he didn't get to enjoy the gains for very long, his rig was stolen less than 4 months after the rebuild.

Remember the one rule of thumb when working on the little 22R/RE engines. They can be improved, but no matter what I or anyone else comes up with, they will never really be a hot rod.

They can be made more fun and it's nice to get over hills without wearing out the gearshift lever....*EB

EB, they are popular, but your's are the MOST popular. Stats from 3 weeks ago from the Insurance Institute (whatever that is), said that in 2007, the 1988 Toyota truck was ranked #10 on the theft list in the US. Needless to say, we have to take a lot of precautions to protect them.

Sam knew she was going to get a cookie. I swear that Dog was smiling. This is a true story, I didn't smack the guy or even really say much, no need to.
