Getting the Wheeling Fever
Jeepers,

Good afternoon... I'm changing out the waterpump, timing, etc on my 82 CJ-7. The 4 water pump hub studs that hold on the pully/fan/clutch have a few munked up threads and I want to replace them this go around.

ACE does not have them and the Jeep Dealer does not either because the computers don't go back that far... Anyone have suggestions on where to get them or if the size used on my CJ were used on a later model of another Jeep?

The end that screws into the water pump hub is a fine thread and the opposite end that the nut screws onto is standard.

Thanks for the help and suggestions..

Mike

Try some place like NAPA, Autozone, Checker, etc. You know, a regular auto parts store. Those studs are common automotive parts.

ANY parts house will have them... Pumps USED to come with new studs! I have a nice assortment that I have saved over the years.

So far my local ACE and NAPA online are a no go. ACE has the right threads on both ends but the center length (no thread area is much too big).

There is a NAPA near work I'll hit up on the way home today. I may end up having to just use these old ones; they're not in horrible shape...

New water pumps don't come with the studs anymore.

Hold on to what you have. The local Jeep dealership has them listed as "Discontinued". I'll post where I get them with their proper identification (if I locate new ones with the right specs).

Onward...

If you absolutely have to reuse them, run 'em through a die to re-thread them. The local shops should have a thread pitch gage so you can figure out which tap & die set you need. Harbor Freight also has whole sets pretty dern cheap. If you're not using them all the time they'll do fine for your purposes.

Look in your local yellow pages for a "fastener" company. If you don't see one listed, contact a few professional mechanics and/or construction companies -- those two typesof businesses will use a fastener company regularly. A stud such as you describe should be a piece of cake for them, regardless of length. You can even get them with coarse threads on one end and fine threads on the other, if your application calls for it. You can also try to Google "fasteners".

Thanks for the input guys...

I was successful at my local CarQuest Auto Parts (Formally Central Auto Parts).

The company that makes the Water Pump Hub Studs needed for the CJ (6 Cyl) is 'Motormite'.

Product: Motormite 'Water Pump Stud Kit" # 23733.
Stud Size: 5/16" x 1-1/4"

The package contains 4 studs, 4 (5/16") Hex Nuts, and 4 Lock Washers for $3.25 (+ tax).

If you're replacing the water pump.. pick one of these packets up as well. Great quality and saves time removing the old studs from the old water pump. (the studs are what hold the pulley, fan, and fan clutch together.

I hope this thread is searchable down the road for the next bloke needing these studs.
