Getting the Wheeling Fever

Stopped and filled my 95 4runner up today. Went by shop to get tools and smelled gas strong as I was putting them in back of truck. Had a small puddle of gas on the ground. Looked to be leaking up high on side of gas tank by passenger rear wheel. But could not see exactly where it was coming from. How bad of a job is it to get tank off. And if it is tank how much should I expect to pay for one. THANKS

I'd be simply amazed if you had a hole in your tank. Not like it doesn't happen, but more along the lines of nearly impossible on a 95. Is there a lot of rust? If not, start thinking fill hose, vent hose (return line), etc. Check clamps and connections and make sure lines are sound. The tank isn't that hard to remove, but I'd be looking for a lot of other culprits first.

Noticing he's from texas^^^ he certainly hasnt seen a 95 from new england. its not that hard to drop gas tanks i would just do it and get it over with quick and easy there should only be a couple of lines and one connector then the two straps and filler tube. there very well could be a rot hole in the top of the tank.

The tank does not look rusty from the bottom looking up. But the metal lines going to it do look rusty. I live in Ohio so we get our share of snow and salt.I can see filler hose and it is not leaking there. But that is the only connection to tank I can see. I guess it is still necesssary to lower just to check connections?

I'm with Richard on this one, I would bet money on the pressure line from the fuel pump coming out of the tank.

The sending unit lines always rust out, which is unfortunately a dealer only item. And if that line is rusted, most likely most of the screws holding it on will snap and you will need a new tank, or extract a bunch of broken screws from it.
May get away with jb welding the hole in the line. Replacing gas tanks is probably the most PITA thing to do on these trucks, but still not too bad since these trucks are easy as hell to work on.

If it was the high pressure line from fuel pump.Wouldn't that make truck run like it was starving for gas. Though I didn't like driving it home with a leak. It ran fine.

Yes, I'm from Texas, and rust is rare. My thoughts were based on the fact that he mentioned he just filled up and then saw a leak. If the fill hose running down to the tank was not secure, it would leak fuel down onto the tank and make it appear as though the leak were coming from the top of the tank. The return line is usually not to dofficult to check either. If it were the pressure line, which I didn't mention, on an EFI truck, this could cause running problems. Keep it basic, check the simple stuff first, then pull the tank if all else fails. ![[Linked Image]](http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn221/corvette1986us/Truck/Dsc06416-1.jpg)

Noticing he's from texas^^^ he certainly hasnt seen a 95 from new england. I'm a couple shy of 50 and have been around the world working for Lockheed Martin. I have filled 3 Passport books and am on my fourth. I have lived in Egypt and South Korea. My in-laws live in Montana, my parents lived in Danvers, Mass for almost 12 years. Yes, I have seen rust. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> But I am a born and raised redneck and this is home.

If you do find that you need a new tank check out these guys. I bought an '86 tank for my '84 efi swap here. Living in the heart of the rustbelt I have seen corrosion problems with the pump mounting bracket, which is what the pressure and return lines pass through as the enter and exit the tank, on first generation 4runners. Usually the metal lines corrode at that point, but the vehicles are usually very rusy by the time that that happens. The pump bracket holds the in-tank fuel pump and mounts to the tank on top with a circular mounting plate. They retail for about $120 from the dealer. Be very careful if you have to use power tools to remove rusted fasteners from the tank. One spark from the motor brushes of a tool could cause an explosion that would change your life. -- Matt
