Mine's a manual trans, and I don't know if they have any relation to each other at all w/regard to the reverse light switch, but mine has failed several times. On the manaul it's mounted on the outside of the tranny sort of up on drivers side IIRC and is pretty easy to get to and replace. If it functions the same way on the auto you should be able to plug a tester into it to check.
