I believe the owner stated that he "barely pushed in the clutch" and the noise went away. This would eliminate the front bearing in about 99% of the time. Once the tranny is out, if there is no noticeable wear to the clutch or bearing, then the tranny is already out and he can consider getting it overhauled at that time, also eliminating the need to pull it out twice.
