i have a 2000 jeep cherokee and i was wondering how high of a lift i could go without requiring new drive shafts. also what else i would need besides drive shafts if i did go higher. what are the best lifts to get for it too?

What'cha lookin' to do? A 2" budget boost will get you on to some good 31's. That will do some pretty tough trails with a bit of other gear. Much more lift and bigger tires brings a whole new bunch of issues w/ a Cherokee..Re-gearing, driveline angles, etc. What are you trying to do?

i am wanting to go about 4 to 6 inches but i dont want to end up needing a bunch of extra parts. i have a friend who went 3 1/2 inches and he didnt have to change anything so i was thinking mabey i could go 4 1/2 without any extra parts because i want to clear 34 tires

I think your friend got lucky. 3" is generally about the limit for a Cherokee and some have had issues with that w/out additional work. From what I've researched on the Cherokee (GF has one; I haven't done the lift yet, but been looking into it), if you're going to go with that much lift you will need CV shaft, SYE, change R&P, etc. Get ready to spend $$$. Also check to see what rear axle you've got - it could be the d35 or Chrysler 8.25. If it's the Chrysler it'll hold up okay, if it's the d35 don't bother spending for gear change or a locker, it'd be a waste of money. A 2" and some good 31" MT's will get you a long way...Far enough that a winch would be your next best investment.

i have lifted a few xj's & i found that most will take up to a 4" lift before you have to mess alot with the driveshafts. if you go above 3" to 3.5" then you will end up lowering the t-case, extending the brake lines front & rear, changing the lower control arms & trac bar & front disconnects. & you will want to regear after 32" tires.
i am with you DBL...i have a 92 with a procomp 3.5 & a set of hercules mt's 31" & a winch & i am so haaaaapppppppyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!
a ful kit is the best way to go one that has the t-case drop, the trac bar relocation brackets & the brake lines & the springs & shocks & a steering stabalizer. try to get spring packs for the rear if you can afford them. add a leafs arent too bad but they go out after a couple of years.

The overall issue is "depends"....

You can do 4" lift in a Cherokee with minimum investment.

Start with a basic 3" lift and add 1" spacers under the front springs.

The 3" lift generally does an "add-a-leaf" to the rear spring pack. I went to http://www.tomken.com/ for a set of 4" leaf springs to use inplace of the add-a-leaf.

Extended rear brake lines are required.

You don't need to extend the front brake lines as long as you do not disconnect the sway-bar.

You do need to to a transmission/transfer case lowering (about 1").

Doing that, I ran 31s on my Cherokee with minor fender trimming.
