I am planning on Friday to go to the junk yard and pull some parts off of this 89 LWB 3.0L Auto that was sitting in the back of the yard. I have a 1988 2.6L auto SWB and what can I pull from this truck that I can add to my 1988. It has the limited slip rear end in it. Are the transmissions the same?

Transmission from the V6 will work from the LWB in the SWB, just need the torque converter with it, and swap the bellhousings. The V6 truck actually has a bigger torque converter which is nice, and if its the right mark in the year it could have a lockup. Transfer case will not work, the V6 truck has a different output shaft, unless you think you can swap the tailshafts/housings. Otherwise.. you're looking at lots of different stuff that probably won't fit drivetrain wise.. but you can pretty much look at all the body stuff and determin what will fit and what won't.

Front clip and doors, front seats, antenna, dash (speakers different), V6 front brake setup, glass, front mudflaps, both bumpers (rear will require changing the mount and end caps), bouncy seat base if there, rear door, brake drums and shoes, and small miscellany are what will be interchangable. Grab the front diff and CV's if you want to upgrade.
Rear axle is different, everything behind the front doors...

Guys, Thanks for your input I guess I will be at the yard tomorrow for more than an hour. I have read in the past that guys pull the rear ends out of Gen II and install in Gen I's. If that's the case what year and truck do I look for, and what do you pull?

If you can find one a 94-96 SR's with the factory locker. Also grab the trailing arms that come with that axle as they are beefier than the gen I trailing arms.
You'll also want to get the factory air compressor to activate it unless you already have an onboard compressor. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

He's got an 88 4 banger. Leaf sprung. Needs the locker out of a Sport XLS, IIRC. It's what Landraider put in his. Search that and you'll find the details.
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Whooaaa..hold on there..If you have an 88 like your post says that meand you're truck has the rear leaf spring setup. V6 (and all US LWB) models have a coils spring setup. what this means is that none of the coil spring rear end housings are set up to bolt into your rig.
But there is hope. Find yourself an older model Montero Sport with the locker, they have leaf springs in the rear and will bolt in. Landraider did this.
(EDIT: HAZY BEAT ME TO THE PUNCH!)

Your are correct I have the rear leaf springs not the coils. Can you tell me what year I am looking for. In my 88SWB the rear end I believe they refer to it as open I want to replace it with the best scenario. I have a 87 SWB with a limited slip diff. and I think that rear end is a better choice. I am not willing at this stage to spend the $$$ for the ARB but I am looking to pull something out of newer Montero if someone can point me in that direction.

Search for Montero Sport locker under username Landraider.

Choices: 1.)Rear locking diff or LSD out of older leaf sprung Montero sport 2.) LSD out of Junkyard 89 or older 4cyl Montero 3.) ARB That about sums it up.
