Getting the Wheeling Fever
I think a while back, someone tried "screwdriving" into my truck...and f0cked up the driver's side lock. Putting the key in meets some weird resistance...and it won't turn when in there.
Can I replace this? if so, do I need new keys? if so, can I get a "matching" ignition?

Yes...you can replace it/them. Even from the parts yard if they have all the right pieces (keys and all the locks).

There's a remote possibility that it could be rebuilt as well. But that's something yer gonna have to weigh out. How worn down are yer keys?

I know the door locks are fairly easy (from my perspective) to pull. Not too sure about the ignition lock though... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

You can do a couple things.

1) Remove that door lock and take it in. The key code is stamped on the cylinder there. More than likely you'd need the VIN also. If you bought the truck new, they would've given you a little tab along with your keys that has the key code on it. They started doing this with rigs after '82 or so.

I would call the dealer and ask if they can look up the key code based on the VIN before I started tearing things down, that way your rig remains secure. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

2) Swap the door locks from the pax side, temp or permanently, up to you. I take it the keys work on the pax side lock?

I actually just thought of swapping the passenger side one today as I was unlocking it...thinking I was having a stroke of genius. Turns out, just some delayed realization of the obvious. Will investigate what it'll take to do the swap.

Will also contact dealer to see what a more "permanent" solution will run.

As far as worn key, I can start it up...and pull the key out of the ignition. Kinda handy at times.

The key number was only stamped on the passenger side door lock in my truck. I think each door lock has some attached piece that is backwards on the other door.

You can get a complete set of locks and keys from the parts desk. You can possibly order one lock by code number: they can give you keys by code.

If you know what you are doing, you can rearrange the tumblers from one or more door locks to make it work using your key.

They should be able to cut you a new key as well...from the numbers and not from yer existing key. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I dont think there is much in the fsm about the locks. It definitely does not talk about repinning them but there is a good drawing of this kind of lock in the "MIT guide" labeled as a disk tumbler lock.

As for replacing them:

The doors are easy, take the door panel off and you will see them in the handle.

The fuel door lock is obvious. One spring clip.

You have to take the bottom of the dash off to get the ignition lock. Find a little recessed button on the bottom of the lock housing. Push on this button while you put the key in and turn it, the button will move up and the lock will come out.

It takes about 1 hour or so to install the set of 4 locks.

Yep, FSM is more for the interior panels as anything. Locks are pretty straightforward themselves. Ign lock is in the FSM tho'. I use a paperclip or jeweler's screwdriver to depress the detent to remove.

About 2 years ago my driver side door lock stopped working - it would go in, but wouldn't turn. Can't remember the exact sequence or timing, but very soon after I couldn't even open the door from the inside - what an amazing PITA - the first time I regretted bucket seats. I could not, no way, no how, get that door opened - couldn't even disassemble the door from the inside. Couldn't get the mechanism to work from the top (window rolled all the way down). Spent a week fooling with it until I gave up and went to a mechanic - he had to take out my driver seat through the passenger side (doh!) and took the door to pieces. A plastic piece in the latch had broken and jammed - he said it was actually pretty common. Ugh. If you can still get the door apart, you might consider replacing some of the plastic parts in there...
