Need a Spot
I understand that a 1987 Dodge Raider is a rebadged Montero, so I'm hoping someone here can help me.
I've been running the numbers on Edmunds.com this morning. What's the real value of a 1987 Dodge Raider with AC and AM/FM/CD (aftermarket) with 155k original miles, all orig parts except belts, alternator, radiator exhaust and battery. Good BFG mud tires on it, with a grill guard too. Overall condition is clean, color is red, paint needs to be buffed out to shine, but no rust, no repainting, and only one small ding below the turn signal. Interior condition is very good, but the current owner removed the back seat and no longer has it. Truck appears to be on the original clutch.

Edmunds says from a private party this truck is worth around $400. Seller is asking $1500, I wondering if he is smokin' or what? BTW, Kelley Blue Book says the 1988 version of this truck would be worth $850, I'm guessing that for another year older Kelley would say about $650 (kelley doesn't go back to 1987).

Is this vehicle really worth this high a premium over the Kelley and Edmunds values??

I paid 1800 for my 88 in 2003. It had 87k miles on it. Drove fine. Needed a carb and a rear hardline. If I really thought it though I would of picked up a solid axle toyota

also kind of depends what area your in and how many are on the market there. I bought my 89 monty 4 door 4x4 ac brushguard lsd rear for 1000.00 about a year and a half ago. any running truck is worth at least a grand here though.

Offer him 1200 cash. He should take it unless he's sunk a bunch of work into it. And unless you're out west, that's what they're worth out there.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

I gave $1,400 for mine about 5 years ago, 175K miles - and that was with new tires! That also included the dealer paying tax and license.

Bottom line is that it's worth what the local market will carry.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 1987 SWB and 1988 SWB. The first one 88 SWB I purchased for $1800 from the Salvation Army and it was in stock condition 128K miles on it. I had to replace the head gasket 6 months after I purchased it. Since then I have $4,500K in it and I had the motor rebuilt, painted and added a wench on the front end. The second Montero I purchased was last summer 1987 SWB with 132K on it for $400.00. I found it on Craigs list and some kid in the Valley inherited from his grandfather. It is bone stock in excellent condition and runs great except for a leaky head gasket. Just look around there are deals out there.

It's worth whatever he gets for it.
It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

Everything has a price. It is up to you as the consumer to judge weather or not it is a fair trade for you hard earned money. Will he laugh as soon you he is paid? maybe. But if it lasts another 150k miles, you will have made your investment many times over.

I myself have too much invested in mine to think about selling it, unless someone made me an offer mailto:joe0403@gmail.com but because of the economy, I have a better chance of selling the Montero than the 3/4 Chevy. I sure could use the cash, but the current running value of my Chevy is 1/2 what the KBB sez and more like where Edmunds sez... then there's NADA...such a scam, but the banks believe it, so it must be true. :shakes: I'd rather give it to my mother than sell it for less than I have invested, so the price on the window (of the Chevy) remains 13k [but I'm open to offers if someone doesn't try 'funny' stuff]
Now, I just looked at my 91 on KBB for California, here I am and where the Montero is from, it go's from 2000 to 2800 PPV. Look it up in New Hampshire where I'm from and it say's 2000 to 2700.... Ummm, Being from NH, I am 99 44/100's percent sure you won't buy or sell a 91 Japanese truck for much more than scrap rust...Errr scrap metal. Just today, my neighbor here in California had a plumber come to his house driving a 78 Datsun pickup in very good shape, repainted, but it was still all as it came from overseas.

Now...what was I ranting on about?............
Oh, ya... Stiletto, you left out allot of particulars like engine, modifications, location, title, stuff that would help people laugh...or cry over the deal.

Check Auto Trader on the www to see if you can get some prices. Blue Books appear to be mathematically made, so they don't necessarily reflect reality. While you're looking around, try to find an '89 V6 - more powerful, better mileage, more reliable, etc.

Like others said, it all depends of the area and how much you are willing to pay. I was amazed that back home in Puerto Rico people still pay $5000 for them and as well as the Samurai and old school Heeps they are currently the hottest item.

I got an 1988 that bought nearly 7 years ago, WOW time is surely flying, and I paid $2,400 and probably have invested right now a bit more than that but, if you ask me how much it is worth to me? PRICELESS.

Back to topic, if you are not comfortable with what the owner is asking, make an offer. I bet the price is negotiable.

Good Luck

I think any car that has four wheels, is not rusted out and drives straight down the road is worth $1000. If you live in an area where emissions certification is required then a car with four wheels, not rusted out, drives straight down the road and passes emissions is worth $1500.

However, like folks have said, there are always bargains out there when someone is fed up with a vehicle, wants it gone and doesn't know how to look up value on the internet. I got an '83 Montero SWB for $25 a couple of years ago. (first year of production with Euro bumpers and a steel grill)
