Getting the Wheeling Fever
My 87 4runner starts hard the first start of the day. It starts fine after that except if I let it sit for hours then I have to grind on the starter for 30 seconds or so like the first start of the day.

i'm actually having the same problem, 86 1 ton 22re, and have questions regarding that, on things I tried, hopefully it will help ya troubleshoot your problem. I tried the fuel pump jumper trick to bypass the MAF sensor & others, and it didnt help starting, the only other switch between the fuel pump and engine(when ya do the jumper wire) I believe is the fuel pump relay behind the glove box, which actually turns the fuel pump on when the engine is cranking. I'm thinking I narrowed it down to that relay or the fuel pump. because the way I understand it, that is the purpose of the jumper trick, (to bypass everthing except for that relay & the fuel pump) unless the cold start injector has something to do with it ??? hope that all makes some sense !!

The fuel pump test jumper will make the fuel pump run if the ignition is on. To test, insert the jumper:

Turn the key to the ON position and listen for the relay on the passenger side to click. If not, the relay is dead or the wiring to it is bad. If it does click, is the fuel pump running. How to tell? Listen for it, passenger rear wheel well to hear the pump or up front listen for a hissing sound from the fuel pressure regulator. No sound; either the relay is dead or the pump is dead. How to tell which? Pull the connector at the pump and test for voltage. Should be 12 volts if the relay is working.

If all the above is good, then you are (or should be) getting fuel to the injectors. Problem lies elsewhere.

Leaky injectors? bleeding off fuel pressure.

The problem could be that the pressure in the fuel rail is bleading off overnight. That would cause hard starts in the morning. If you are loosing pressure the reason(most likely) is that the check valve in your fuel pump is not holding overnight. If you jump the pump and your truck starts right up there is a good chance that you need to replace the pump.Leaky injectors will show problems on hot restarts as well as cold starts. You can also crack the fuel line fitting at the coldstart injector and check for residual pressure after sitting overnight. If the system is holding pressure there will be a fine spray out of that fitting. If fuel drips out then you don't have enough pressure.
