To keep from ruining the cable, you want to wind it up nice.
Anchor the hook to something immobile and winch your vehicle up to it in neutral or with a little brake just to keep the cable taught while you carefully guide it neatly onto the drum.
Use heavy gloves and dont be tempted to let the cable slide through your hand... hand-over-hand it.
