im honestly confused as to how that would happen <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />... the hub bolts to the knuckle, and the wheel bolts to the hub. As long as the bearings , and ball joints are good, it seems their shouldnt have been any slop

Body Damage is Cool
The two halves of the unit bearing are pressed together.
They are held there by the stub shaft, trust me the press fit does not hold together with the tires on the ground and driving, usualy about 50 feet.

They get drug onto trailers and brought to me held togther with bubble gum and bailing wire, the knuckle ears for the caliper break off, and the caliper get destroyed.
and you get to see the remains of the inside of a unit bearing minus the ball bearings because those fall out all over the road.

If you think I'm making this up, take out your stub shaft and drive around for a bit, with oe size tires it might last a little longer, but 35"s or bigger,, good luuck.

Ok SD so using this logic path, assuming one had a failed front diff, one then should be able to remove both front axle shafts, press the axle stub shaft off of the u-joint, and re-assemble the hub assembly back together with the stub shaft installed, leaving the axle shaft part out so the diff is not spinning, but the bearing hub assembly would be properly retained then. Correct? I am not trying to be argumentative with this at all, I just trying to figure out where my original assumptions failed me.

Thanks,

Sean

100% correct, what I have in the tool box in my xj is a stub from a 2 wheel drive xj, they have no ears, just the stub and splines.

ok. THAT does make sense. i didnt really consider how the hubs were held together. It all makes perfect sense now. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />
