I'm wanting to swap a carbureted V8 engine into my 1990 SWB automatic 4X4 and what I'm wanting to know is what engine if any will bolt to my transmission with the least trouble

Welcome to the Wire. Engine swaps is one of the more common discussions as far as mods go. Your best bet is to search past threads for starters, then post back with specific questions.
There aren't too many V8s as it requires far more cutting and fabbing. There are swaps with other Mistu 3.0, and turbos swaps for 2.6s. There are a few Chevy 4.3s out there now too.
Mistu swaps tend to work with the Mitsu trannies. The 4.3 swaps tend to use the Chevy tranny. Don't know what the few V8s used.

Raider 302 swap thread Even if some V8 bolted up to the Mitsu trans, they'd likely be inadequate or short lived afterward, especially the stick 4-cyl trans. Baldy put a 350 Chev into his pickup, one guy managed to get a newer GM 6.0L engine in. I like the 302 for the compactness and good length, thread link above. Nothing is going to be a bolt in, though. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I'm working on swapping a dodge 318 into my '88. It's a big project but should be worth it in the end. I should have more info for you in about a month or two on how everything went.

I did 6.0 Chevy swap with NV 4500 and NP 241. Had to move radiators forward and redo all floor. Probably with some body lift it would have fitted better. It's quite a bit of work if you want to make it reliable, so if you go to V8, then take as good engine as possible at first place. I'm using my car as daily driver and it's a lot of fun. Have dynoed it 386hp from engine, did 13.6s and 102mph at 1/4mile, 0-60 in 5.2s. V8 swap is a lot of work, but will pay off at the end. Good luck! This was a thread some time ago. Some pictures are deleted, but you can get some overall idea. http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showf...&o=&fpart=9&vc=1
