Getting the Wheeling Fever
Maybe you've heard it before, The front end of my engine started getting loud, like the water pump cavitating. It got louder and louder, A few times I stuck my head under the hood and it sounds more like it's coming from where the passenger side cam pulley would be. Now, this all started after the valve tap noise returned. Maybe off a tooth on the cam? Bad pulley/bearing?

I haven't taken a wrench to it yet I'm waiting for garage access, I haven't opened any books yet, I'm just starting to speculate. In the meanwhile, it's been parked.

My plan is to take the intake off, look at the valve train and the water pump while I've time and access to it all.

Some things in that area that are famous noise makers are:

1) Power steering pump
2) Alternator
3) Idler and tensioner pulleys

I've put my hands on the alt, and the tensioner, the noise does not match the vibration (HEAL ME) But the PS pump.. I did see rust (growing) on the dipper in the reservoir, pretty bad to say I hope it is that, but the recent tappity tap tap makes me think the worst.

"tappity tap tap" sounds more like a stuck lifter.

Ya, I'll check the holes, see what's squirting and not, maybe there is a stuck spring inside... I really would like to break the last mechanics fingers.

Speaking of noises, I think I read in the manual somewhere that there is an adjustment if your timing belt is making noise? If so what does it sound like, if I cant sell the Raider before I transfer I want to feel comfortable that the belt isnt going to leave me somewhere in Nebraska <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

If your t-belt is making noise, it's not on right or the tensioner bearing or water pump is failing. Do the t-belt, tensioner, and water pump ASAP or you'll be sittin on the side of the road. Once it's installed properly and tension is set, it should never need readjustment. Obviously, until it's time to replace it again.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sold that its the t-belt though. It sounds like a lifter, tick, tick ,tick...but its comes and goes. The company is not going to pay to have it shipped so if I dont sell it I may be forced to fly back and drive it to Kansas City (from Denver). I hate to spend the time and $ on a t-belt and pump if it deosnt need it, the previous owner had the engine replaced but he was unsure of the mileage. What to do...What to do....

Better safe than sorry. $80 in parts and an afternoon and you know you're good.

More than $80 for t-belt and water pump. And depending on miles, consider the tensioner and pulley while at it. Still, a weekend DIY all-in that will save the better part of a grand off stealer service.
