Just got my injectors back and installed so thought I'd do a quick review for anyone who may considering having their injectors cleaned.

Mine had 200k on them so I figured it was about time, and after reading 4crawler's review I decided it was worth a try. I sent my injectors off to RC Engineering (two day ups), got them back exactly a week later (I chose three day select shipping, and I'm in northern Idaho) shiny and clean. The report said that three of them were leaking and had poor flow rates, now their great.

Initial Impressions
First test drive indicates smoother throttle response and MUCH smoother idle. Also, before when I would downshift to engine brake down hills there would often be a slight muffled backfire (that buzzy burble sound) which I can happily report is gone.

Recomendations
One thing that I did was go to the dealer and order new insulators for the injectors. RC sends the injectors back with new orings and grommets, but my old insulators were smashed and hard. I'd recommend replacing any rubber parts or gaskets while in there. Also, I bought a 22mm box end wrench to put the fuel rail damper back on, definitely worth it. I used channellocks to get it off, not fun.

Conclusion
In the end it cost me $114 for all four injectors, plus return shipping (plus I had to pay for shipping there). Without a doubt some of the best money I've spent, and in retrospect should have done years ago. As soon as I get a chance to take a long drive with it I'll report on any change in gas mileage.

I've been considering this job as well. Have 241K on the 22RE. I have also read 4Crawler's write-up on his experience. My only question is: Is there any reason or point to keeping up with which injector came out of which port? Do they need to go back in the same cylinder they came out of after being balanced and cleaned is what I am trying to ask. Thanks for writing up your experience and sharing with the rest of us. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Injectors are interchangeable. The point of cleaning and balancing them is to make then all flow equally, as in balanced flow.

Quick note though, I had also considered buying some already cleaned injectors (ebay store) and just swapping them in, figured I'd save some time. DON'T. There are several part numbers for the early 22re's, and although some are interchangeable, and some are superceded numbers your asking for trouble. I checked my vin with the dealer before I bought some (luckily) and found out that even though the part numbers they had listed were for my year truck, my vin actually called for a different part number entirely, no idea why though. It's always best to rebuild what you have than replace if possible, then you know it's the right part.

**Update**

I finally had a chance to take the truck for a longer drive so here are some results:

Gas mileage increased by approx 2mpg (90% highway), the only other thing I did along with the injectors was to clean the throttlebody and upper intake plenum. For my case this means that simply cleaning the injectors gave me about a 10% increase in fuel mileage. Also I found that there is a definite increase in power, nothing mind boggling, all the major hills still required the same downshift, but now I need about 10% lower throttle setting for the same speed. Power on the highway is definitely smoother, especially at mid throttle settings.

To Summarize:

My truck : 86 4runner SR5, 22re, 5spd, 198k, recent tuneup (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, airfilter, timing adjust) all about 3k miles ago. 31x10.50's A/T's with about 5k miles on them.

Modification/Adjustment: Injectors cleaned by RC Engineering, cleaned throttle body and upper intake plenum. Did not adjust or remove TPS.

Cost: $115 for four injectors with return shipping (3 day) to Northern Idaho, total cost minus shipping was $96 for four injectors.

Results: Estimated 2mpg increase in fuel mileage (at 90% highway mix). Definite improvement in idle and general smoothness. Noticible improvement in highway performance.
