On the TPS, the wires on mine point toward the passenger fender. The TPS at all the parts stores that they look up the wiring harness points toward the firewall. thanks phillip Go to rockauto.com. Click the big red button to start, then select Mitsubishi, 1989, Montero, 3.0L. Select emission then throttle position sensor. I believe from the picture that the Airtex part shown is what you are looking for. NOTE: Doing the same search for an '89 Raider 3.0L only shows the type with the connector in-line with the shaft rather than at 90 degrees. More than once I've found that parts catalogs seem confused by the Dodge Raider badge, but an equivalent search for '89 Montero yields what I need. Good luck! Eric W.

sorry just saw this post. my truck still is not fixed. so far i have thrown a fuel pump and sock fuel filter and TPS at it. absolutly no change so far. ECM shows no codes. on the up side i have someone sending me their handheld diagnosic tool with the cartridges so when it gets here i should be able to figure it out by what is out of spec. Wish me luck. if you get it figured out before me please yell at me and tell me what you have found.

welcome to my world. i had/have the same issue for better than a couple years now. a little advice to for both of you, quit throwing parts at it. its something stupid, something that has been over looked. i recently replaced a few key items, namely the alternator and iac... the alternator made a huge difference for how it idles since the old one was a little weak. keep it simple, check your connections, wiring, have your alternator checked, check plugs and run a can of bk44 through it for the injectors. personally if i was to do it all over, i wouldnt adjust the tps unless i knew it was the problem. just out of curiosity, either one of you have any head work done? almost forgot, set your base timing 5/8 degrees btdc and go from there if your going to start messing with that.

As stated at the beginning. the fuel pump / filter had been changed just before I got it. I put a new dist cap/ rotor button on it. Thats all I'm throwing at it for now.
I can rev it up to red line and its smooth and strong, stomp it to the floor or hold it at over half throttle and its dead except for the pulses. So I know the fuel lines are clean, fuel pump is working, filters not clogged, etc.....
I'll agree that its something stupid Simple. I sat and stared at it today for 30min's hoping something would jump out and grab me, a bird landed on a limb in the tree up above and took a crap, splattered on the edge of the hood and on me. I looked up and told the bird thats exactly what I was thinking....

Did you pull the 89 FSM for Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures [Includes: No-start and Driveability] from the link in my sig? You'll need a DRB II unit and related MMC adapter. Other than that, can't help much.

grass if you had the same issue as the one i have you wouldn't be driving it anywhere. mine will rev and run real nice as long as you never push the throttle more than 1/4 if you do it goes dead and goes to a crappy modulating fast idle. let off it and as soon as the throttle has come back to 1/4 or less runs like there is nothing wrong. it's a damn sensor and we aren't going to figure it out til we get a DRB unit hooked up and can see what craps out at more than 1/4 throttle. thing is that 2 trucks have the exact same problem within say an hour and a half of each other. this is crap someone has got to know what it is it seems to be getting quite popular lol.

your half right. it sat on and off for months at a time. i kept throwing parts at it left and right or tear it all apart just to put it back together and it would run normal briefly and then right back to same old crap. it was is vicious cycle and if it wasnt for the war department god only knows how much money and time i would have thrown at it. there for awhile, i didnt have any choice but to get used to its issues and drive it until i bought a daily driver. anywho, back on point. fuel pressure regulator? vaccuum leak? i know that little ball bearing valve-a-mathing on the break booster effected my idle when it was worn. so many things come to mind. btw, as for this crap getting popular... mabey contagous is more appropriate.

well the tester showed up yesterday and i ran it a bit but no sensors or switches not functioning. alt is putting out 14.5 so thats not it. all injectors all fireing, is really hard to find anything because you have to make it malfunction to check what the sensors are reading. so far no glaring problem. i have contractors working on my house for the next couple of days so maybe i'll see if i can get back at trying to diagnose the problem this weekend.
