Steering behavior w/ LockRight in front #906615 09/22/08 12:11 AM

Got my new 3rds installed (For the record, 5.29s ROCK). Aside from E-locker rear, I also put a LockRight in the front.

Note - this is my 1st experience w/ a front-locked vehicle and/or auto-lockers.
After the first drive, I'm a bit surprised at the way it behaves.
2 questions arose...
1 - W/ hubs (manual) locked but in 2wd, street manners are fine - cornered pretty normal, although I do have a consistent Click-Click-Click about 6 times per tire revolution during sharp (90 deg) corners... but it's not very loud. Any ideas? 6/rotation = # of stub shaft studs... I've replaced those w/ nuts/bolts, but did this years ago, never an issue. Can see any evidence (yet) of rubbing but the clearance is really close.

2 - W/ 4wd engaged, though - Holy Hell, steering is out of the question. It drives like the front is just welded - serious scrubbing doing corners, pushes me straight. What really surprised me was the amount of torque steer - applying or letting off the gas would push it to the side, like a stuck brake caliper might. What are
This is all on pavement, about a 1 mile jaunt around local road.
I guess what seemed odd was that w/ 4wd engaged, so power is ocming from the DS, the unit never seemed to disengage so the wheels could turn. Isn't it supposed to? I thought the point was the stay engaged when straight, then w/ turned drop out/open up, then re-lock again. In the first condition above, both shafts are still turning due to the locked hubs - it's fine w/ that.
Now thsi was all on-road driving, abou ta mile local highway/side streets.
How much of this is normal? Never driven a front-locked truck or auto-locker.

1- the clicking is normal. That's just the locker disengaging and the teeth sliding over each other.

2- Mine didn't behave particularly badly. You may want to make sure tire diameters/pressures are matched. Difficult steering is expected. All the tires have to turn "at least" as fast as the driveshaft is trying to turn them. The only tire that may unlock is the one on the outside of the turn, and you won't really even notice it.

I've got an ARB up front now, and trying to turn in full spool mode is even worse than it was with the lockright.

You really don't want to be driving it around in 4WD on dry pavement at all (even without a front locker). That puts a lot of stress on the drive train.

normal..

if you are going around the corner, not stoping and starting off.
you push in the clutch and roll around the corner.

starting off, get rolling let off and turn.

but doing this on pavement with stock axles you are looking to break something.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have got a cj5 with a lockright in the front, and the only time it disengages (while in 4wd in the tranfer, and the hubs locked) is when coasting. That is when I get the clicking sound. I have a detroit in the rear, and it does the same thing. When going around a corner coasting it just clicks, while accelerating around a corner the tires squeal like crazy. My lockers only lock up when there is power going to that differential. I am guessing that is the way they are supposed to be. (unless they are selectable of course)

Fun part is, I have an automatic tranny... so popping into neutral not really so easy (esp w/ my shifter bushings all worn out liek they are)

Thanks for the input
