Random Tips. Mormons ROCK OUT on food storage. From what I hear they will let non Mormons make use of their sealing and canning stuff. Just require a deposit on the canner, and a copy of your ID.

dude, you have no idea! im married into a lds family and when it comes to pantrys... theres no beating them/us.
the church mandates 3/5 day storage for emergancies, but recently you should see the cases off of the shelves. not that i think that its time to move into a cave surrounded by whatever type of boobytrap that i feel like creating, things are bad. the gd was no joke... heard all about it from my grandparents. i though my g-ma was kidding when she told me about how they used tire treads from old tires to replace the soles on worn out shoes... until i saw some very old pics and wondered when did goodyear make a shoe? however, i do still call bs on her walking 5 miles in 5 feet of snow uphill both ways to school. my feelings on this, hold your job. be the best at it. eliminate ALL credit purchases. redirect all available funds towards debt reduction and save whats over. and i dont think that it would hurt to hit a case lot sale or 50 and bury that saved cash in a hole in the backyard. honestly, the stuff could still hit the fan and if so... xenu help us all.

Be sure to pack some food that is good for you and that you don't like. A good survival kit always has food you don't like. That way, when you're really desperate, it'll be there when you really need it, instead of being snacked-on when you didn't really need it.

Like 12 year old MRE's , nothing like eating the white crust of a fruit bar. And make sure you knead those peanut butter packs first otherwise you will get all oil

Medicine/sanitation

I am not very strong in this field, but I will do my best to bring some ideas to light.

You'd be prudent to stock up on medicines that you / your family need to take on a regular basis. This seems Obvious, but I know my parents don't have but a few weeks supply on hand of their stuff. Personally I do not take medication, but I still have some OTC stuff on hand. Take pills for high blood pressure, or you are diabetic??? You know what happens when you don't get your insulin....etc.

First aid kit. Get one, and make sure it is well stocked. I stuff extras into my kits. Epi Pen, Nitrile gloves,

CPR classes. Take a red cross class if you have a free Saturday. Keep a cheap sheet in your first aid kit. (I am deficient on this subject)

Sanitation... How much TP do you have on hand

Lots of folks from the depression era remember using a sears catalog in the outhouse for wipey wipe. Do you know how to construct an outhouse? How about treating the waste? Might ought to look into that.

Water!!!!

Have you got water? Is it safe to drink?
The downfall of the 3rd world is folks defecating in their drinking water. I think this would be common sense, but for a lot of folks.. apparently it is not.

So you have a well, and think you're set huh.. How is that well powered? Ahh electricity, and so if your out of power, you can't drink. think about that for a few minutes, and get back to me.

If you are lucky enough to have a hand pump that brings good water to the surface, then good on you. Basics like not pouring motor oil into your ground will keep you safe for the most part. If you've got an artesian well, then you're in even better shape.

I would seriously consider a way to safely purify your drinking/bathing water.

Boil. This is the best way to remove bugs.

Bleach. 8 drops to a gallon and let sit for an hour is what I have always done

Some water filters can also be used for small amounts of drinking water. A lot of folks put one of these in their pack to make use of streams, or other rivers that they may come across.

Disaster water treatment

IF I were on city water, I would #1 move, but if not that then this is the next best option. Possibly even if you have a well, this is a good option.

Water Storage site.

The main idea here is that if you do not have clean drinkable water, you will perish. Post Katrina we had our city water shut off for about 5 days, and that's no fun. Try taking a shower out of a 20 Oz water bottle.

my thoughts....
the world will keep going on and on and on..
this is just a hiccup...
now what would really scare me is a crazy epidemic..
you know: something like "Captain Trips" from stephen king's "the Stand". or maybe a T-virus like in "resident evil"

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but if you're worried about some scifi rage virus, and not about out out of control spending, and monetary problem I don't know what to tell you.

I think means of personal protection are rather limited for single person hold out. Eventually one might be asked to "share".

Who said anything about a 1 man stand? My neighbors happen to be Serious county folk that work for a living. There is a huge sense of community, everyone knows everyone, there is always sharing, and believe me when I say this..... If you're snoopin around somewhere you don't belong, some one will notice. I will never be asked to share, but offer first. All my neighbors are good folks who are prepared, and work just as hard as I do to protect my family.

I think the great doomsday plan budget would be better spent on a replacement 454 for a chevelle.

Boy would I like to have my chevelle running. One day when my house is complete, and my other responsibilities are taken care of I will be able to go all out, and build a forged bottom end, and roll with the big dogs. Until then I will focus on more practical aspects of life.

There is no doomsday budget. I will tell you that I have spent CONSIDERABLY less than the cost of a bbc bottom end.
Besides... I'd look awfully silly ridin a 650 hp muscle car when I am unemployed, and burning wood for heat.

Well.. good deal for taking notice, but the general opinion of "bear grissle" is not very high in the survival community. He does some serious stupid moves, and I would be wary of listening to any of his advice for wilderness survival.

6 acres with a dump trailer that'd have to go. I trust everyone around me currently, but USMC neighbors are always welcome. I can put you in touch with a Realtor if you'd like.

I know very well. smile I understand all about the LDS folks, but while I do happen to agree with them about food storage, disaster preps, and lifestyle choices, most of their religious beliefs are not compatible with me. Nonetheless..... LDS folks.
