While you are in there check the stack in the diff clutches. Many of them come ABBA, if you swap the inner and outers to ABAB you get a stronger lockup.

The old Starion stack looked like this.

I re stacked it like this. Is that correct? I am having trouble getting the diff case A on. I have a press but can't figure how to keep the top spring plate lined up with the slots?

Yup, that is how you want to rearrange the stack.
The cover should not need pressing.
The cover will set up a bit but will pull down with the screws if all is lined up.
If one of the plates is out of line and hanging up it is just there to piss you off, you will win eventually.
Once it does set in place do not tighten the screws down hard, just snug them. The ring gear bolts will hold it all together and the screws are captured in case one backs out.

Thanks, it went a lot better after a nights rest. Some how i had one to many friction plates in there. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I am really looking forward to trying the 3.90 at the drags before they close for the winter. I track the car a lot so any gain should be apparent.

One of the biggest gains you may find is how easy the car will come off the line.

The pattern looks pretty good, maybe still off a tad. What do you guys think? Thanks

STARION
The 3.90 pattern in the Starion housing. .071 pinion shim @ .005-6 back lash. I added .001 to the preload shim and it was to loose to get a good back lash reading.

TRUCK
The 3.90 pattern when the gears were in the Truck housing. Back lash was .005

I have the 3.90 done, About 250 miles now and all is well. Here is a link to where i track tested it. Time slips and videos.
http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=81527&st=40&start=40

I am working on the 4.22 now. These gears were new, but were run with improper set up. I am not real concerned as the wear is not where the pattern will hopefully be when set up right.

I am concerned about a slip fit on the small pinion bearing, it slides on and of by hand. The pinion was apparently sanded down and mics about .0005 smaller than it should be. Are you guys confident that locktight will keep it from spinning on the pinion?

This rear is for a friend who likely will sell them after he tries them. Hes always buying and selling stuff. I may try and sell some of these geared starion rears and i don't want my name to be mud if it comes apart on the next owner.

Can i trust the lock tight or should use a used ring and pinion and keep the suspect "new set" for my own use?

My speedo gear is 23 tooth. It looks like my options are 24 or 26 tooth. What model, engine and rear combo would i find the 24 and 26 tooth drives in?

Thanks guys.

If use use Loctite correctly it works very well.

Clane the parts and make sure you use stud and bearing mount.

I have run rear ends set up this way for 25 + years with no problems.
